SVQ in Social Services (Children and Young People) SCQF Level 7

What is special about this course?

Do you currently work within a social service, social care or healthcare setting?   

This work-based course will give you the opportunity to gain an internationally recognised qualification based on the practical experience you carry out on a daily basis.  

This qualification assures employers that you have the skills, knowledge and abilities required to work with children and young people, up to the age of 21.  

It will also allow you to register with the Scottish Social Services Council at ‘practitioner’ level.   

Entry requirements

  • SVQ Social Services (Children and Young People) SCQF level 6   

           OR 

  • NC Early Education and Childcare   

It will also allow you to register with the Scottish Social Services Council at ‘practitioner’ level.   

The course consists of the following four mandatory units:  

  • Communication   
  • Safeguarding   
  • Health and Safety   
  • Reflection on Practice   

A further four optional units are selected depending on your current roles and responsibilities at work.   

How will I study my course?

  • Part Time
  • Work based

As well as being in employment, you will be expected to carry out 3 hours of flexible learning each week. There will be no scheduled class time but you will be expected to attend regular meetings with your assessor. These are arranged on an individual basis but are usually 2-3 hours each week.

What can I do on completion of my course?

What you do after this SVQ will depending on your job role and responsibilities. Further study might include:  

  • BA Childhood Practice    
  • Social Services (Children and Young People) level 9   

It is possible to transfer to the adult sector by undertaking some additional units in SVQ Social Services and Healthcare.   

Successful completion of this course will enable you to  register with Scottish Social Services Council as a Practitioner in a day care of children service.
