Maritime Skills Level 5 NQ
What is special about this course?
By combining SQA and RYA / MCA certification in this Maritime Skills course, students will receive a very comprehensive introduction to the maritime industries, plus additional internationally recognised certificates. This Course has been specifically designed to provide candidates with opportunities to develop the general and practical skills, knowledge and understanding and employability skills needed to work in the sector. Theoretical shore based studies and practical activities afloat and will give students an insight into workings of the maritime industries – which includes commercial sea fishing, the Royal Navy, the Merchant Navy, Maritime Search and Rescue, marine leisure / sailing, commercial sea fishing, aquaculture, ports and harbour industries
Entry requirements
While no previous experience or qualifications are necessary access to the award is at the discretion of the College. Applicants should be 16 years or older at the start date of the course.
The SQA National 5 Maritime Skills Course is an introduction into the Maritime Industry. It will provide students with information on this vocational area and help inform decisions on further learning paths. Successful completion of this course may lead to progression into NC Maritime Studies.
The course has the following five SQA Maritime Skills Units:-
- Vessel ropework anchoring and mooring operations
- Basic Navigational Watchkeeping
- Securing a Vessel for Passage
- Coastal Navigation
In addition, the course will have some of the following certificates:-
- RYA Powerboat Levels 1 and 2
- RYA Essential Navigation Shore-based Theory
- RYA Day Skipper Shore-based Theory
- RYA First Aid
- RYA VHF Radio
There will also be elements delivered from the following:-
- STCW Proficiency in Maritime Security Awareness
- STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibility ( or Professional Practices and Responsibilities
Equipment
The College will provide access to the College RIB, outboard engines and other specialist equipment. The College will also provide lifevests or lifejackets, and all PPE required.
How will I study my course?
- Full Time
Theory based sessions will take place in either Dunoon or Oban learning centres. Practical activities will be arranged by your lecturer and may be weather dependant.
How long will my course last?
17 WeeksThe course will run for approximately 3 days per week.
