Introduction to Garden Design content

Introduction to Garden Design

In this course, you will learn how to design a garden space of your choosing, which could be your own garden or that of a friend, a local school, or any other suitable location (your lecturer will give you advice about this).

You will learn about the principles of design, how to gather a client brief or decide what you really want from your own space, how to carry out a basic site survey, and how to create a design, drawn to scale, for your site.

This course would suit anyone with an interest in improving their garden or interested in learning basic design skills to begin designing for other people.

In this course you will learn about:

  • Garden design principles such as the use of colour, mass and void, rhythm, scale and proportion, light and shade, focal point, flow and more.
  • The techniques used to survey a garden site and how to use that information to design appropriately.
  • The legislation that restricts certain design and build choices for various sites such as building control and planning permission.
  • How to draw a garden plan to scale.

This course contains no exams or tests. It is assessed through a garden design drawing project based on a site of your choice which will be presented to the class at the end of the course.

You’ll need a drawing pencil, A3 paper, a ruler, and a set of compasses. You may also find the following equipment useful but not essential: Scale rule, circle template, colouring pencils or pens or paints.

How you will be taught

Classes will be delivered in a live, online classroom. You may attend any UHI Argyll local centre. Students in remote areas may join from home using a laptop or PC with camera and microphone enabled.
