Graduation
UHI Argyll welcomed graduates, families and guests to the Queen’s Hall in Dunoon on Friday 25 September for this year’s Graduation and Celebration of Success ceremony. The event brought together learners from across Argyll and the islands to mark the completion of studies in Further Education, Higher Education and Modern Apprenticeships.
More than 70 graduates crossed the stage, each recognised for their hard work, determination and the commitment shown throughout their studies. The ceremony also highlighted the strength and resilience of learners who have balanced education with work, family life and community responsibilities.
Student of the Year Awards
A highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of UHI Argyll’s Student of the Year awards. These awards celebrate not only academic achievement, but also personal growth, perseverance and the positive impact students make within their schools, workplaces and communities.
2026 Award Winners
- Regional School Student of the Year Morgan Brownlee, Islay High School. Recognised for academic excellence, emerging leadership and outstanding support for fellow pupils.
- Further Education Student of the Year Brooke Byars, Oban. Praised for her maturity, resilience and professionalism, and for consistently producing work of a high standard.
- Higher Education Student of the Year Fiona McCusker, Isle of Islay. Commended for her determination, commitment to lifelong learning and the difference she makes to the children and families she supports.
- Modern Apprentice Student of the Year Kevin Gresham, Catering Manager, Hermitage Academy, Helensburgh. Acknowledged for successfully combining his Modern Apprenticeship with a demanding professional role and applying his learning to benefit pupils and colleagues.
Guest Speaker
The ceremony welcomed guest speaker Nathan Tyler, who reflected on his career in broadcasting and education and congratulated graduates on their perseverance and achievements. Mr Tyler will take up the role of UHI Argyll Principal and Chief Executive later this year.
Closing the Ceremony
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Maggie Tierney, Chair of the Board, followed by a traditional piping recessional.
Speaking after the ceremony, Maggie said:
“Graduation is always one of the highlights of our academic year, and this ceremony was no exception. Our students have worked incredibly hard, often balancing study with jobs, family commitments and the demands of everyday life.
We are especially proud of our prize winners, whose dedication and enthusiasm have consistently shone through. They are wonderful representatives of all our graduates, and we applaud each of them.
Our graduates embody the talent, resilience and potential of our communities across Argyll, and we look forward to seeing what they go on to achieve.”
