What is special about this course?
The aim of this course is to give students knowledge and experience of working in a commercial hairdressing salon. The hairdressing SVQ is assessed in the workplace and/or the college salon.
Students must work in a professional manner taking into account establishment requirements such as appearance and dress code; personal conduct; personal hygiene; reliability and punctuality
You may study this course full time or by work based learning attending college for theory.
Entry requirements
Students will be interviewed prior to acceptance on the course and must show an interest and flair for hair and fashion. It is likely that you will already have achieved SVQ 1 Hairdressing at SCQF level 4.
Part-time students must be in employment. Want to study part-time? Contact your nearest learning centre in Dunoon or Oban.
As an SVQ2 student, you will already have gained the basic techniques of shampooing and conditioning, blow drying and dealing with customers. During this course you will extend your skills into the areas of cutting and colouring, as well as deepening your knowledge of the other key areas.
The course is made up of 7 Mandatory Units as follow:
- Style and Finish Hair
- Set and Dress Hair
- Cut Hair using Basic Techniques
- Colour and Lighten Hair
- Advise and Consult with Clients
- Shampoo, Condition and Treat the Hair and Scalp
- Develop and Maintain your Effectiveness at Work
and 1 Optional Unit from the following list:
- Plait and Twist Hair
- Relax Hair
- Perm and Neutralise Hair
- Temporarily Attach Hair to Enhance a Style
- Remove Hair Extensions
- Fulfil Salon Reception Duties
How will I study my course?

Students will gain experience and be assessed in the work place or the college salon. For part-time students attendance at college is mandatory to undertake the underpinning knowledge required for the qualification.
All full-time students are expected to bring clients into the college salon, probably from amongst their friends and family, on which to practice skills and carry out assessment tasks.
All students will be in college 3 days a week, as well as undergoing placement for one day a week in a local salon - this can be a salon with which you have a prior link, or the college will identify a suitable employer for you.
How long will my course last?
1 YearThe full-time course runs from September to June, and allows those with prior experience the opportunity to further develop techniques and customer care skills.
Those in employment may complete the course over 2 years, with attendance at college one day per week. Want to study part-time? Contact your nearest learning centre in Dunoon or Oban.
