What is special about this course?

This course will provide you with a firm foundation in areas such as food safety standards in manufacture, working safely, plant and equipment operation. 

Entry requirements

Candidates must be in a suitable job role, where they are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities, which allow them to gather the required evidence, and have been so for a minimum of 12 weeks prior to commencing the qualification.  

Since core skills are a part of all Modern Apprenticeships, you may need to provide a core skills profile during the application process. 

The Modern Apprenticeship is made up of 4 elements:

  • SVQ in Food and Drink Operations (Fish and Shellfish Processing Skills) at SCQF level 5  
  • Core Skills  
  • Mandatory Enhancement 1 - Elementary Food Hygiene  
  • Mandatory Enhancement 2 – One of the group D units from SVQ document  

There are 2 mandatory units:

  • Maintain Workplace Food Safety Standards in Manufacture  
  • Work Safely in Food Manufacture  

An additional 6 optional units will be selected by candidate and employer, supported by assessor. The qualification is flexible to be built around each individual candidate, their job role, and business.  

You will engage in practical learning experiences within the workplace, where you'll create evidence-based submissions for your e-portfolio. Additionally, a college assessor will visit to conduct observations to further evaluate your skills and progress.

Fees

If you are on a low income or in receipt of certain benefits may receive a fee waiver. Please refer to page 2 of our Fees and Funding Guide to see if you are eligible. You can download a fee waiver form. If you would like help or advice on fee waiver, please contact your nearest learning centre.

This course is not available to students who require a Tier 4 Home Office visa to study in Scotland (international or EU).

What can I do on completion of my course?

The SCQF level 5 award could provide progression to:

  • SVQ in Food and Drink Operations at SCQF level 6
  • NPA in Food and Drink Manufacture at SCQF level 6
  • HNC in Food Science and Technology at SCQF level 7
  • management or leadership degree level study at a higher education institution
  • career development or employment in the food (fish and shellfish) sector
