Social Sciences Level 5 NC

What is special about this course?

In this level 5 course you will study a broad range of social science subjects including Psychology, Criminology, Sociology, Social Anthropology and History as well as being supported to develop your personal awareness and employability skills in relation to social sciences.

You will develop your investigation and research skills whilst studying topics such as the role of the brain in behaviour, the structure of the mind, philosophical concepts, the causes and impacts of crime and crime scene protocols, attitudes to place and people’s sense of culture and belonging, key historical events in Britain and more.

This course is suitable for anyone interested in exploring an introduction to Social Sciences and for those who would like to progress to our Level 6 Full Time NC Social Sciences in September.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. Applicants must be 16 years or older at the start date of the course.

Topics you will study:

Psychology 

  • How to carry out research in psychology 
  • How society influences behaviour 
  • Psychological theories including Psychoanalysis (Freud, Horney), Behaviourism (Watson, Skinner), Positive Psychology (Seligman) 

Sociology 

  • Concepts of culture, sub-culture, identity and diversity and process of socialisation 
  • The relationships between socialisation, identity and diversity. 

Social Anthropology 

  • Examine your place in the world in the context of relationships and special occasions. 
  • Explore how people’s attitudes to places contribute to their sense of belonging. 

Criminology 

  • Police crime categorisation 
  • Crime reporting and media 
  • Crime prevention 
  • Crime scene protocol 
  • Physical and psychological evidence available from a crime scene 

History 

  • Evaluate and analyse key British historical events and their impact 
  • Philosophy 
  • Philosophical definitions of knowledge 
  • Problem identified by scepticism 
  • Explore rationalism and empiricism 

How will I study my course?

  • Full Time

This course is delivered through live video conference classes using our online virtual classroom and can be studied from any of our UHI Argyll Centres. 

The video conference classes are interactive and you will be able to interact with your lecturers and fellow students in real time, asking questions, completing activities and joining in with group work.

How long will my course last?

1 Academic Year

The course will run for approximately 3 days per week

What can I do on completion of my course?

This course, and particularly the associated study skills you gain, would prepare you well for entry to the level 6 NC Social Sciences course. 

Studying Social Sciences prepares you for a career in a wide variety of areas including:

  • Campaigning and research

You will also have sessions which will support the development of your personal awareness, communication skills, team working and transferable meta-skills which will prepare you to progress to higher levels of study.
