Engineering Operations (PEO) SCQF Level 5

What is special about this course?

The SCQF Level 5 Performing Engineering course is highly practical and is designed to prepare you for employment or a Modern Apprenticeship in engineering. You will develop a wide range of engineering skills while gaining an appreciation of health and safety and employability issues.

The course will be delivered full time in our dedicated engineering workshop at the college's Construction, Engineering and Renewables Centre in Lochgilphead.

Suitable candidates may also have the opportunity of an engineering-related work placement during the course.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a keen interest in pursuing a career in the engineering sector. Previous completion of the Skills for Work Engineering Skills or our Access to Engineering courses would be beneficial but is not essential.
 

The SCQF Level 5 Performing Engineering Operations course consists of three days of taught sessions each week in our bespoke engineering workshop in Lochgilphead and comprises the following units:

  • Preparing and Using Manual TIG or Plasma-arc Welding Equipment
  • Producing Components Using Hand Fitting Techniques
  • Producing Sheet Metal Components and Assemblies
  • Maintaining Mechanical Devices and Equipment
  • Maintaining Electrical Equipment/Systems
  • Working Safely in an Engineering Environment
  • Working Efficiently and Effectively in Engineering
  • Using and Communicating Technical Information

Equipment

All Personal Protective Equipment will be supplied by the college.

Practical delivery takes place in the engineering workshop and classroom at the college's Construction, Engineering and Renewables Centre in Lochgilphead.

Fees

Scottish resident full-time students will automatically have their course fees paid for this course.   

If you have recently moved to, or do not normally live in Scotland, you may need to pay £5,970 in course fees, these can be paid in instalments. Families of Armed Services personnel are subject to different fees regulations and may also have to pay course fees. If you think this may apply to you, please contact us and we can advise you. 

This course is not available to students who require a Tier 4 Home Office visa to study in Scotland (international or EU). 

Part-time FE students who are on low incomes or in receipt of certain benefits may also have their course fees paid for them. Please refer to page 2 of our Fees and Funding Guide to see if you are eligible.  

What can I do on completion of my course?

This course is a pre-requisite for a number of engineering Modern Apprenticeships, and successful candidates may also progress to further study or a range of careers in a wide range of engineering disciplines.
