Beauty Therapy and Treatments NC Level 5 NC
What is special about this course?
Do you dream of a career in the beauty industry?
The NC Beauty Level 5 course will teach you all the basics and give you the hands-on experience required to kickstart your career. You will learn how to practice essential beauty treatments, such as makeup application, facial skincare, nail care, lash treatments, waxing and massage, whilst also gaining an understanding of the science behind the practices.
You'll spend most of your time in our college salon working with real clients, and learning from experienced lecturers, who have industry expertise as makeup artists and salon owners. You'll have the opportunity to visit local businesses to observe the daily operations of salons and spas first-hand, and gain valuable insight into the professional world.
There will be plenty of time to practice treatments during class and we'll even provide you with your own beauty kit to take home to practice your new skills.
Entry requirements
You must be 16 years of age at the start of the course, and
- hold three National 4 qualifications, or equivalent,
- or have successfully completed Access to College.
We also welcome applications from individuals with relevant industry experience.
All applications are considered on merit with regards to positive engagement with staff and fellow learners. You may be invited for an interview.
Much of your time will be spent in the college salon, practicing:
- How to carry out essential beauty treatments
- Application techniques, including the use of different tools and products
- Client care and consultations, practicing with your fellow classmates and real clients
- How to work in a safe salon environment
In the classroom you will:
- Learn the science behind different beauty treatments
- Develop a portfolio to present your practical work
- Develop product knowledge
You'll have the opportunity for personal development too and we'll support you to:
- Improve your ability to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues
- Work collaboratively with classmates to build strong relationships and support each other
- Develop skills in time management and organisation
The units you will study include:
- Facial Skin Care Treatments – learning how to carry out detailed skin analysis, identify different skin types and conditions, and tailor treatments to meet individual client needs. This includes cleansing, toning, exfoliation, facial massage, mask application, moisturising, and understanding the benefits and effects of facial treatments.
- Back, neck and shoulder Massage – you will learn a range of therapeutic and relaxation techniques, explore the benefits of massage on the body, and gain knowledge of the muscular, circulatory and lymphatic systems, as well as the anatomy of the treatment area.
- Hand and foot care – learn how to identify skin and nail conditions/ disorders, develop practical skills required to provide industry standard manicure and pedicure treatments including nail care, cuticle care, massage techniques and nail varnish application. Learn about the anatomy of the skin and nails.
- Waxing Services – you will learn about hair structure and the hair growth cycle, the benefits of depilation, and how to safely and effectively remove hair in line with health and safety requirements. Training covers popular treatment areas such as eyebrows, upper lip, underarms, legs, and the bikini line.
- Scalp Massage: An Introduction – learn how to prepare for and perform a scalp massage treatment, how to perform the correct massage techniques and the benefits of this treatment. Develop effective client consultation techniques, as well as the appropriate homecare and aftercare advice for clients and further in depth understanding of the facial anatomy.
- Apply Nail Art – learn how to identify a range of skin and nail conditions and disorders, understand the structure of the skin and nails, use both nail varnish and gel polish on the finger and toenail as well as a range of nail art techniques including stamping, transfers, striping, foiling, gems and glitter.
- Developing Make-up Skills – develop practical make-up application skills and learn about the factors that can influence make-up application including face shape, colour characteristics, skin structure and skin type.
- Developing Skills in Eye Treatments – gain an understanding of the facial bones and muscles, hair structure and eye shapes. Develop skills in client consultation, skin analysis, client preparation and eye treatment applications including eyelash and eyebrow tinting, eyebrow shaping, strip and cluster lash applications.
- Tip and Overlay Nail Enhancements – develop practical skills and be assessed on tip and overlay nail enhancement application, infill and removal. Learn how to carry out a skin, nail and cuticle analysis and the appropriate products, tools and equipment are required for the treatment.
- Hair, Beauty and Make-up: Competition Technical Skills – this unit allows you to explore the creative side of the industry. You will learn how to research, plan, and design a make-up look for competition entry, work safely under pressure, and evaluate your performance to continuously improve.
Equipment
The college will provide tunics and all required products and equipment.
How will I study my course?
- Full Time
This practical course will mainly be taught in-person in our salon.
You will attend class for approximately 3 days per week. You will be required spend around 8 hours in flexible learning outside of class.

Funding
Bursary for Living Costs
If you are 18 years of age or over on the start date of your course, and will be studying full-time you may be eligible for bursary funding, depending on your household income. Our bursary fund is finite and is allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis so it’s important to make your application for bursary as soon as the application process opens in July. You will need to have accepted our offer before you apply.
If you are under 18 you may be eligible for EMA. EMA is paid at a rate of £30 per week dependent on your total household income.

You may also be eligible for assistance with travel and childcare, and we have discretionary funds for those students in need. You can find all the information you need in our funding pages.
What can I do on completion of my course?
Most students who complete this course go on to further study with the NC Beauty Care Level 6 course.
Some of our students have gone on to find work in local salons, with their employers valuing the work ethic, timekeeping skills and industry knowledge the course helps to develop.
