What is special about this course?
This 13-week open learning self-study course will introduce Trigonometry, develop Geometry and Algebra understanding, and will provide confidence in applying these skills to a range of everyday situations.
The student would normally be expected to have achieved Core Maths 2 or equivalent.
Candidates undertaking Core Maths 3 will:
- perform calculations
- use graphical relationships
- perform basic algebraic operations
- solve right angled triangles
- carry out a mathematical investigation
How will I study my course?
- Open Learning
You will be provided with open learning materials and will be assigned a support tutor for the duration of the course.
You will work through the workbooks in numerical order, carrying out the practice exercises as you go. There are 4 Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs) for you to complete, which appear in the workbooks throughout the course. These will be marked by your tutor, and will be used to decide if you are ready to take the final assessments.
The final assessment of the course consists of 5 Learning Outcomes, which are generally very similar to the Tutor Marked Assignments. Your tutor will tell you when you are ready to take each Learning Outcome.

What can I do on completion of my course?
On successful completion of the course, candidates can progress to a National 5 level Mathematics course.
