Modern Apprenticeship: Parks, Gardens and Green Space SCQF Level 6

What is special about this course?

Kickstart or elevate your horticulture career with a Modern Apprenticeship and earn your SVQ in Parks, Gardens, and Green Space at SCQF Level 6. Gain practical experience while working towards a qualification that enhances your career prospects, all while continuing to earn. This program allows you to obtain a recognized qualification for the work you already do daily. As a work-based qualification, UHI Argyll's assessors work with candidates in person and remotely, with no need to arrange day release to college.

Work towards a qualification which will be recognised by employers such as Mount Stuart, Scone Palace, Achamore Gardens, and the wider business sector.

Entry requirements

No prior qualifications are required to undertake this qualification; however, candidates must be in a suitable job role, where they are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities, which allow them to gather the required evidence, and have been so for a minimum of 12 weeks prior to commencing the qualification. 

This qualification has been designed in partnership with the Sector Skills Council and Lantra to ensure relevance to the sector. 

The Modern Apprenticeship is made up of 4 elements:

  1. SVQ Parks, Gardens and Green Space SCQF Level 6
  2. Core Skills (embedded in qualification)
  3. Meta Skills
  4. Mandatory Enhancement (Emergency First Aid at Work must be achieved and one other enhancement)

Candidates must complete 12 units in total – 6 mandatory and 6 optional.

The 6 mandatory units are: 

  • Promote, Monitor and Maintain Health, Safety and Security
  • Co-Ordinate the Establishment of Crops or Plant
  • Estimate Resource Requirements and Programme Work for Land-Based Projects
  • Identify and Name Plants Using their Botanical Names
  • Co-Ordinate the Control of Weeds, Pests, Diseases and Disorders
  • Manage Your Own Resources

You will engage in practical learning experiences within the workplace, where you'll create evidence-based submissions for your e-portfolio. Additionally, a college assessor will visit to conduct observations to further evaluate your skills and progress.

Fees

Skills Development Scotland contribute to the funding of Modern Apprenticeships. 
UHI Argyll have fully funded places available for those aged 16-to-24-years old, and part-funded places for those aged 25 and over. An employer contribution fee is required for those aged 25 years and over. 
To be eligible for an apprenticeship, candidates must be in paid employment, contracted to work a minimum of 21 hours per week. 

What can I do on completion of my course?

After completing the apprenticeship, you could move onto jobs such as Gardener, Horticulture Specialist, Landscaper, and Parks Officer.
