Modern Apprenticeship: Sports Coaching SCQF Level 5

What is special about this course?

Start your career with the Sports Coaching SCQF Level 5 Modern Apprenticeship where you can develop your skills in planning and delivering coaching sessions whether that is football, tennis, rugby, shinty or any other sports coaching – to an industry standard.
Designed to support the development of sports coaches working within any number of coaching roles such as active schools, grass roots football and rugby or any other sports coaching role.
The goal of the apprenticeship is to enable learners to develop a range of knowledge, experience and skills to perform their roles confidently and completely in a sports coaching role

This qualification covers areas such as

  • planning
  • delivering and reviewing sports coaching sessions
  • maintaining the health, safety, welfare and security of participants and staff
  • responding to concerns about possible safeguarding issues
  • supporting participants with disabilities to take part in activities
  • instructing children in health-related exercise and physical activity

Entry requirements

Candidates must be in a suitable job role, where they are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities, which allow them to gather the required evidence, and have been so for a minimum of 12 weeks prior to commencing the qualification. 

Since core skills are a part of all Modern Apprenticeships, you may need to provide a core skills profile during the application process.
 

The Modern Apprenticeship is made up of 4 elements:

  • SVQ in Sports Coaching at SCQF Level 6
  • Core Skills 
  • Mandatory Enhancement 1
  • Mandatory Enhancement 2

There are 3 mandatory units:

  • Plan Sports Coaching Sessions
  • Deliver Sports Coaching Sessions
  • Review Sports Coaching Sessions

An additional optional unit will be selected by you and your employer, supported by your assessor. The qualification is flexible and designed to be built around you as an candidate, your specific job role, and the business where you work. 
You will engage in practical learning experiences within the workplace, where you'll create evidence-based submissions for your e-portfolio. Your college assessor will visit to conduct observations to further evaluate your skills and progress.

Fees

Skills Development Scotland contribute to the funding of Modern Apprenticeships. 
UHI Argyll have fully funded places available for those aged 16-to-24-years old, and part-funded places for those aged 25 and over. An employer contribution fee is required for those aged 25 years and over. 
To be eligible for an apprenticeship, candidates must be in paid employment, contracted to work a minimum of 21 hours per week. 

What can I do on completion of my course?

Once you completed this level 5 programme, you could progress to one of the following Modern Apprenticeships at SCQF Level 6/7

  • Coaching, teaching and instructing Sports Development Instructing physical activity and exercise Outdoor Programmes
  • HNC/HND in Coaching and Developing Sport or HNC/HND Fitness, Health and Exercise
