Launch or advance your career in Aquaculture with a Modern Apprenticeship and gain your Diploma in Aquaculture Production SCQF Level 5.  Learn on the job and work towards a qualification that progresses your career while still earning a living. You to gain a recognised qualification for work that you are already carrying out on a day-to-day basis. This course doesn't require you or your employer to organise any day release because our assessors visit you so you can open up promotion possibilities without any inconvenience.

Work towards a qualification which will be recognised by employers such as Bakkafrost, Mowi, Scottish Sea Farms, and the wider business sector.

Entry requirements

No prior qualifications are required to undertake this qualification; however, candidates must be in a suitable job role, where they are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities, which allow them to gather the required evidence, and have been so for a minimum of 12 weeks prior to commencing the qualification. 

 

This qualification has been designed in partnership with the Sector Skills Council and Lantra to ensure relevance to the sector. 

The Modern Apprenticeship is made up of 4 elements:

  1. Diploma in Aquaculture Production SCQF Level 5
  2. Core Skills (embedded in qualification)
  3. Meta Skills
  4. Mandatory Enhancement (e.g. Emergency First Aid at Work, RYA Powerboat Handling)

Candidates must complete 7 units in total – 4 mandatory and 3 optional.

The 4 mandatory units are: 

  • Maintaining Aquaculture Stock Health and Welfare
  • Maintaining Aquaculture Facilities and Equipment 
  • Maintaining Health, Safety and Security 
  • Developing Meta-skills and Personal practice 

You will engage in practical learning experiences within the workplace, where you'll create evidence-based submissions for your e-portfolio. Additionally, a college assessor will visit to conduct observations to further evaluate your skills and progress.

Fees

Social Services, Families and Young People. Wednesdays 9.00-4.00pm consists of 3 SQA units and costs £258.

Care of Children Thursdays 9.00-1.00pm consists of 2 SQA units and costs £172

If you are on a low income or in receipt of certain benefits may receive a fee waiver. Please refer to page 2 of our Fees and Funding Guide to see if you are eligible. You can download a FEE WAIVER FORM here.  If you would like help or advice on fee waiver, please contact your nearest learning centre.

If you do not qualify for a fee waiver, you may be able to apply for an Individual Training Account (ITA) to cover up to £200 the cost of this course.

This course is not available to students who require a Tier 4 Home Office visa to study in Scotland (international or EU).

What can I do on completion of my course?

The Diploma in Aquaculture SCQF Level 5 could provide progression to the Diploma in Aquaculture SCQF Level 7 and then the Aquaculture Management SVQ SCQF Level 9.
