Social Services (Children and Young People) PT SVQ3
What is special about this course?
This course will qualify those wishing to work within the Early Years or with Young people to a Practitioner level.
Successful completion of the course will allow the students to register with the Scottish Social Services Council at ‘practitioner’ level.
Students should have attained one of the following:
- SVQ 2 Social Services (Children and Young People) SCQF level 6
- SVQ 2 Children's Care Learning and Development
- NC Early Education and Childcare
This vocational course aims to provide you with the skills and knowledge required to work with children and young people 0 – 21 years in a variety of settings and to qualify you to work in a supervisory capacity. You will gain an international recognised qualification which guarantees that you have the skills, knowledge and abilities required to carry out your role successfully.
The course consists of 4 mandatory Units and 4 optional Units.
Category 1 PVG course: PVG Scheme membership is required to successfully achieve target qualification, where there is guaranteed contact with vulnerable groups in key elements of the course. For further information visit this webpage.
How will I study my course?
- Part Time
Placement in a nursery, school, playgroup or a mixture of all will be mandatory.
Students will attend college two days per week to write up reflective accounts on their practice within the childcare setting. Students will have the support of a tutor who will attend their workplace to observe their practice, and assist them in the completion of their portfolio of evidence and support with underpinning knowledge.

This part-time course is delivered over two academic years.

What can I do on completion of my course?
The progression route for each candidate will depend on their job role and level of responsibility.
Students can progress to SVQ 4 Social Services (Children and Young People) at SCQF level 9, or other appropriate SVQs at SCQF level 9.
Alternatively students could progress to BA Child and Youth Studies.
You may transfer across to the adult sector by undertaking some additional units in SVQ Social Services and Healthcare.
