Health and Social Care an Introduction SCQF Level 6
What is special about this course?
This qualification is an exciting opportunity to gain invaluable practical work experience and theoretical knowledge, which will advantage the student when applying for employment. It will provide the student with knowledge that will support further training in SVQ Social Services and Healthcare.
The course consists of a mix of SQA accredited health and social care units and several short courses such as manual handling and food hygiene.
This course is designed for students who are interested in working in the Care industry. Students must be 17 years of age at the start of the course.
Category 1 PVG course: PVG Scheme membership is required to successfully achieve target qualification, where there is guaranteed contact with vulnerable groups in key elements of the course. For further information visit this webpage.
This course includes 4 SCQF level 6 units from the Skills for Work Health and Social Care Higher:
- Care Principles and Practice
- Health, Safety and Protection in Care Settings
- Working in Health and Social Care Settings
- Understanding and Supporting People in Health and Social Care Settings.
Additional units include: Caring for People with Dementia, Prevention of Infection; and the workplace unit Working with Individuals in a Care Setting. You will also undergo the Elementary Food Hygiene certificate and Manual Handling training.
An important part of the course is the one day a week students will spend in the workplace, which will be supported and assessed via the workplace unit.
How will I study my course?
- Full Time
This course is delivered as a taught face-to-face class with practical placement applying theory to practice. Practical experience is gained working in care establishments.
How long will my course last?
Completion of the course will require the student to attend College 2 days a week and 1 day in placement.

What can I do on completion of my course?
Students can then progress to the SVQ 2 Social Services and Healthcare qualification when in employment, to allow them to register as a care assistant with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC).
