What is special about this course?

This course is suitable for school leavers or other young people looking for employment in a business field.

The flexible, practically based course will provide students with an understanding of key business drivers such as finance, economics, law, marketing and customer care together with the important underlying skills of business-based communication and ICT.

It may also be attractive if you are a mature student wishing to change career direction or return to full-time study.  Completion of this course qualifies you for entry to HNC Business the following year.

There are opportunities to study any of the component units on a part-time basis.

Entry requirements

Three National 4 qualifications, preferably including English, or equivalent qualifications or experience.

This course is an ideal preparation for HNC Business, as it introduces you to most of the main areas of study of the HNC.  It also provides a good re-introduction to study for those who may have been away from formal education for a while.

If you don't have time to take the whole NC course you may consider studying a range of the units to complement your existing skills.

How long will my course last?


1 Academic Years

The full-time course consists of 16 credits delivered over one academic year.

The short full-time version of the course is taught over one semester, usually January to June, and you will complete the minimum 12 credits to achieve the NC qualification.

All units of the course are available for study on an individual basis.  Each unit usually requires attendance for approximately 2 hours per week over a semester (17 weeks) but this can vary for some units.  Please ask staff in your local centre for timetable details.

What can I do on completion of my course?

If you have completed one or more component units as a part-time student, you could go on to complete the whole NC award.  This could be done as a full-time or part-time student.

Successful achievement of NC Business is the perfect entry qualification for HNC Business, which can in turn lead to completion of BA Business and Management.
