Application of Maths National 5

What is special about this course?

The National 5 Applications of Mathematics course explores the applications of mathematical techniques and skills in everyday situations, including financial matters, statistics, and measurement. The skills, knowledge and understanding in the course also support learning in other curriculum areas, such as technology, health and wellbeing, science, and social studies.

 

Entry requirements

Candidates would normally be expected to have achieved Core Maths 3, Standard Grade Maths at band 3 or 4, or National 4 Mathematics.

Applicants will be given a short entrance test comprising National 4 level questions.

The following provides a broad overview of the subject skills, knowledge and understanding developed in the course:
♦ analyse real-life situations and problems involving mathematics
♦ identify valid mathematical operational skills to tackle real-life situations or problems
♦ select and apply numeracy skills
♦ select and apply skills in finance, statistics, measurement, geometry, graphical data and probability
♦ use mathematical reasoning skills to draw conclusions or justify decisions
♦ communicate mathematical information in an appropriate way

It is important that National 5 Maths candidates devote regular time to revision and independent study outwith class, as it is not possible to achieve success only by attending the weekly classes and tutorial.

This course can be delivered face to face in a classroom, networked to a number of centres by video conferencing, or through a combination of these methods of delivery.

Start date

Late August.

The weekly evening class is for 2 hours on Tuesdays, and there is also a one-hour tutorial on a different day of the week.

Fees

The fee for this course is £352 which can be paid in installments.

If you are on a low income or in receipt of certain benefits may receive a fee waiver. Please refer to page 2 of our Fees and Funding Guide to see if you are eligible.  If you think this may apply to you, please contact us and we can advise you.

If you do not qualify for a fee waiver, you may be able to apply for an Individual Training Account (ITA) to cover up to £200 the cost of this course.

This course is not available to students who require a Tier 4 Home Office visa to study in Scotland (international or EU).

 

What can I do on completion of my course?

Application of Mathematics National 5 is also a suitable qualification for entry to teacher training programmes.
