What is special about this course?
The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) is an all-round qualification in basic personal computing skills. The qualification demonstrates the increasing importance of computing in all areas of society and is recognised by business and educational worlds. Many employers now ask for ECDL when advertising job vacancies.
The ECDL Extra course builds on the basic skills in ECDL Essentials, providing you with both a Level 2 Certificate in IT User Skills, as well as qualifying you for the full ECDL certificate.
Applicants need to have good basic computer skills, including a knowledge of file management. This could have been achieved through completion of the ECDL Essentials course.
The course consists of four of the seven ECDL modules, as detailed below.
Module 3 – Word Processing
Module 4 – Spreadsheets
Module 5 – Databases
Module 6 – Presentations
Also included is Module 8 – Improving Productivity Using IT
Course materials are online, allowing the student to study at times suitable to them. An induction will be held at the start of the course to introduce the students to the materials, the web site, the methods of contact and assessment.
How will I study my course?
- Part Time
As well as your weekly class, you will have access to a full suite of interactive, online learning materials. You can log on from anywhere with a broadband connection - home, work or your nearest Argyll College Learning Centre.
Each section of the materials is completed by exercises which measure how well you have picked up the essential information from that section. Your tutor can go online to view the results of your exercises, to ensure you are making good progress. If you need to do any further study on any of the sections, your tutor will advise you on that.
If you have problems with any of the exercises, or difficulties in understanding the course, ask your tutor. Your tutor is there to help you with any problems, however small.
Practice test - when you have completed all of the work for a module, you can do a practice test to check that you are ready for your final test. This is an online test very similar to your final module test, and is therefore the best way to prepare for your final test. You need to do this test in the learning centre. You will receive your mark automatically at the end of the test, and your tutor can view your results online.
The results of your practice test will be used by your tutor to decide if you are ready for your final test.
How long will my course last?
Your ECDL Extra course will require a total of approximately 100 hours of study. If a taught class, that will be for a total of 50 hours, with the remaining done as self-study.
