This unit is designed for candidates whose first language is not English but who need to develop their ability to use English in personal and social contexts. Candidates undertaking this Unit will have some previous knowledge of English at a basic level and will be familiar with the Roman script. While studying this Unit candidates will develop their level of competence in the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing in English for personal and social purposes.
At the discretion of the centre although it would be expected for the candidate to have attained the ESOL Literacies units or similar.
Candidates who complete this Unit will be able to understand short, straightforward spoken and written texts, write short, straightforward texts and talk to others on topics of immediate personal and general interest.
Materials will be provided by the tutor as required.
You will receive taught sessions, completing tasks as instructed by your tutor.
The final assessment of this unit consists of 4 Learning Outcomes. Your tutor will tell you when you are ready to take each Learning Outcome. If your performance in the final assessment is satisfactory, you will receive a certificate from the SQA. The learning outcomes will include - Communicating orally in English for personal and social purposes; Producing written English for personal and social purposes; Demonstrating an understanding of spoken English in a personal and social context; Demonstrating an understanding of written English in a personal and social context.

ESOL: Transactional Contexts SCQF level 3.On succesful completion of this course students may undertake ESOL: Transactional Contexts at SCQF Level 3, or progress to SCQF level 4 or higher studies in ESOL
