Learn to skipper a short passage with the instructor on hand to give advice and encouragement and ensure your safety.

This course is in two parts. The first being the knowledge and theory training in subjects such as Collision Regulations (Rules of the Road), Pilotage Techniques, Navigation and meteorology.

The second being the practical side side of skippering, including Boat Handling, Practical Navigation and Pilotage, Passage making and Crew Management.   Note this topic list is not inclusive.

RYA Coastal Skipper 5 day content

RYA Coastal Skipper 5 day

at seaAdvanced training for more experienced skippers building on the Day Skipper course.

This course requires some pre-existing experience and knowledge. 

This is a five day practical course with little time to teach navigation or other theoretical subjects. It is therefore expected students will have the RYA Coastal Skipper/Yacht master shore based theory course prior to the practical course with a view to practicing these skills on the water.

RYA Yacht master/Coastal Theory 7 day content

RYA Yacht master/Coastal Theory 7 day

yacht at seaThis is a pre requisite to both the Coastal skipper and Yacht master practical courses and build upon Day Skipper knowledge and experience.

This theory course will take you to the knowledge level of Yacht master™ Coastal and Yacht master required for the practical exams. 

You will study Advanced Navigation including Position Fixing, Course Plotting, Tidal theory, Electronic Navigation and Position Finding as well as use of relevant marine publications. 

You will also study Meteorology including Barometric pressure, Weather Systems, Understanding and Interpreting Forecasts, Prediction and Observation. 

Finally there will be a section on Collision Regulations.  This course covers both Northern and Southern Hemispheres taking into account regulations in other countries.

nautical chartHowever you decide to take the course, it offers a great introduction to navigation and safety awareness for new or inexperienced skippers and crew, and those wanting to refresh their skills.

In fact it's for anyone interested in sailing, motor boating, sea angling or diving, and works well in complementing our on-the-water training, such as the Powerboat Level 2, Start Yachting and Helmsman courses.

powewrboat at seaThis two-day entry level course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planning speed, and collision regulations.

The course can be taken inland or on the coast and your certificate will be endorsed accordingly.

RYA VHF Radio (Short Range Certificate) 10 hour content

RYA VHF Radio (Short Range Certificate) 10 hour

vhf radio setThe RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the minimum qualification required to operate marine VHF radio equipment on a UK flagged vessel.

This includes both fixed and handheld equipment with and without Digital Selective Calling (DSC). It is obtained by successfully completing an SRC exam conducted at one of Argyll College centres.

*Please not there are 2 versions of this course - The lower cost On-line version or Face-to-Face version.

The cost of the exam fee/certification is an additional of about £65.00 for both.
